Keeping Cool On The Road

Summer is almost here, and that means it’s time to gear up for your next RV adventure. Whether you’re a seasoned road warrior or a newcomer to the world of recreational vehicles, one thing is certain: staying comfortable during your travels is essential. That’s where rooftop air conditioners come into play. In this article, we’ll explore the importance of maintenance, cleaning, and functionality checks for your RV’s air conditioner. Plus, we’ll introduce you to the Dometic FreshJet 7 Series rooftop air conditioner, a game-changer in the world of RV cooling and heating.

The need for maintenance

Rooftop air conditioners on recreational vehicles provide a welcome respite from summer heat or winter chills. However, to ensure they continue to work efficiently and keep you comfortable on your journeys, regular maintenance is crucial.

Efficiency
Properly maintained air conditioners operate more efficiently, cooling or heating your RV faster and with less energy consumption. This is not only good for your wallet but also for the environment.

Air Quality
Over time, air filters can become clogged with dust, pollen, and debris. Regular cleaning and replacement of filters are essential for maintaining good indoor air quality in your RV.

Longevity
A well-maintained rooftop air conditioner can last for many years, providing you with reliable cooling and heating throughout your trips.

Cleaning Your Rooftop Air Conditioner

OUR TIP: Do it now, it doesn’t cost much of your time Cleaning your RV’s rooftop air conditioner is a relatively simple task that can make a world of difference in its performance. If you prefer, you can also book into a Dometic Service Centre prior to your trip and let them do the work for you.

Shut off the power
Before starting any cleaning or maintenance work, be sure to turn off the power to your air conditioner. Safety is the most important thing of all.

Clean the filters
Remove and clean the air filters. You can use a vacuum cleaner to remove loose dirt and debris, and then wash the filters with mild soap and water. Give them the time to dry completely before you put them back.

Check for leaks
Inspect the area around the unit for any signs of water leakage or damage to the roof. Resolve any issues promptly to prevent further damage.

Inspect the exterior
Carefully inspect the condenser coils for dirt and debris. Ensure that the ventilation grills and air intake openings are not covered by leaves, paper, or other objects. Remove and clean if necessary. Check whether the condensation water drainage channels at the sides of the roof air conditioner are clear and the condensation water is able to escape. Show extreme caution if on the roof of your RV; if you are not confident, simply make a booking at a Dometic Service Centre and they will be able to conduct the service efficiently.

Upgrade to the Dometic FreshJet 7 Series

Next generation roof air conditioners - with electronic controls

Fresh design, superior cooling performance, optimised airflow, amazingly quiet operation – these are the outstanding features of Dometic’s new generation of RV air conditioners.

CleanAir technology
Effectively reduces bacteria and odours to keep your RV smelling fresh and clean via the standard built-in electronic ioniser; as the air conditioner runs, it effectively cleans/sanitises the air in the RV.

Dual functionality
The FreshJet 7 series can also provide heating when needed, ensuring year-round comfort during your travels.

Efficiency
Equipped with the latest speed-controlled inverter compressor and heat pump technology, this unit cools or heats down your vehicle faster, more quietly, and more efficiently than most other RV air conditioners on the market.

Climate App
The FreshJet 7 Series has a convenient remote control, but can also be controlled from your smart phone via Bluetooth or Wifi. The Dometic Climate App is an eco-system with the purpose of taking care of your RV’s climate. Click on the preferred mode, relax and enjoy your vacation. Every Dometic Climate product launch going forward will be part of the Apps eco-system.

Functionality Check

Before hitting the road for your next adventure, it’s important to ensure that your rooftop air conditioner is in optimal condition.

Cooling mode OR Heating mode
Run the air conditioner in cooling mode and check if it blows cold air consistently. If your air conditioner has a heat pump, test the heating function to ensure it warms up your RV effectively.

Operation note: If the current temperature in the RV matches or is close to the temperature you have set, the compressor will not engage. For example, if the current temperature is 25°C and you set the thermostat to either 24°C or 26°C, the compressor will remain off as the temperature is already within the specified range.

Inspect the interior
Visually inspect the unit’s cover and air distribution box (ADB) for any damage, or signs of wear and tear. Make sure the air distribution flaps are free and functional. Clean the filters and display.

Choosing the right one

Choosing the right air conditioner depends on which vehicle you have.

Thermal insulation, window surfaces ... and other things to consider
We are sorry to say there is no standard formula to calculate which air conditioner fits which recreational vehicle. Buildings of the same size and vehicles of the same length can have entirely different thermal properties. Their insulation as well as the number and size of the windows decide on how much heat enters the interior. A well insulated caravan with small windows will require less cooling performance than a vehicle with poor insulation and large window areas.

OUR TIP: Don´t save on power!
Make sure the power rating of the air conditioner you pick is slightly higher than necessary for your vehicle. After all, a more powerful air conditioner will cycle down to a slower speed - and only use what energy is necessary to condition the area as soon as the required room temperature has been reached.

Vehicle size
The vehicle length is a useful guide when selecting an air conditioning unit. Before you buy you should also take a closer look at the interior of your motorhome or caravan. How are the rooms laid out, and where are you going to place the unit? Do you want to air condition the whole vehicle or part of it? How large is the area of the room that needs cooling?

These air conditioners are suited to:
a. Motorhomes
b. Caravans
c. Campers
d. 5t wheelers
e. Tiny homes

RVs or caravans with large windows or window areas invariably place higher demands on the performance of any air conditioner. Allow a slightly bigger airconditioner if you have a lot of window area. It is best to block-out the sun as much as possible also by closing blinds in the heat of the day and keep doors and windows closed to help maintain your desired level of comfort.

If unsure - contact Dometis Service Centre who will be happy to advise on your application needs.
